We are developing products that not only perform against expectations in their categories, but do so while offering outstanding environmental benefits through their ability to sequester atmospheric CO2.

The biggest impact which Progressive Planet can have in the cement industry is to replace up to 50% of Portland Cement with natural pozzolan and ground glass pozzolan powders. Both of these minerals require no further roasting (unlike Portland Cement which is roasted twice and off gasses 44% of its weight as CO2).

POZGLASS SCM

The main supplementary cementitious material in North America that is mixed with Portland Cement is fly ash. Fly ash is created when coal is burned to make electricity at coal-burning power plants, making it a major contributor of greenhouse gasses. PozGlass SCM is our proprietary cementitious material. It is produced from natural pozzolan that we mine and blend with post-consumer glass. The result is a strong, chemical resistant, supplementary cementitious material with a much lower carbon footprint than either Portland Cement or fly ash.

  • Its very small particles make concrete highly dense
  • Fly Ash concrete is resistant to acid and sulphate attacks
  • Natural Pozzolan does everything that fly ash does, but better

WITH FLY ASH SOURCES DIMINISHING, WHAT SHOULD REPLACE IT? THE REPLACEMENT SHOULD:

  • Not create huge amounts of greenhouse gasses
  • Use readily available materials
  • Recycle or repurpose materials otherwise destined for landfill
  • Use materials with embedded energy versus burning more fossil fuels to process new materials (Portland Cement)

POZGLASS™ SCM

WHY NATURAL POZZOLAN?

  • Natural Pozzolan contains small particles of pulverized volcanic rock and glass
  • It has high chemical reactivity
  • Its very small particles make concrete highly dense
  • Pozzolanic concrete is resistant to acid and sulphate attacks
  • The Pantheon in Rome is made from Natural Pozzolan, is over 900 years old, and has no rebar!

FUTURE PRODUCTS

As a company which is never satisfied with the status quo, we are working on multiple initiatives to sequester CO2 in both agricultural mineral powders and supplementary cementitious materials. We also are hiring and plan to expand the number of scientists we employ in the first quarter of 2022.

POZGLASS 100G

Our latest work has been to develop a cementing material made exclusively with post-consumer glass. We have called this product PozGlass 100G. PozGlass 100G uses proprietary processes to remove unwanted compounds in the glass. The result is a product with better compressive strength and more chemical resistance than straight ground glass pozzolan.

HOW MUCH ENERGY IS PUT INTO MAKING GLASS?

  • Glass is made by heating silica sand to 1,760 Celsius
  • Why are many glass containers only used once before being disposed when so much energy is required to produce them?
  • Recycling glass into more glass only delivers 0.1 tonne of carbon offset for every tonne recycled
  • Pulverized glass makes a very high-quality, extremely long-lasting concrete

C-QUESTER™  FOAMING AGENT

The other work we are doing right now revolves around sequestering CO2 in cellular concrete. We are proud that we have developed a foaming agent which works to deliver CO2 uniformly into cellular concrete. Progressive Planet tested many commercial foaming agents where we substituted CO2 for air as the compressed gas used to make the foam used in cellular concrete. None of the commercial foams worked.

The foam on the right is a popular commercial cellular concrete foaming agent and the foam on the left is PLAN’s C-Quester™  Foaming Agent below, you will see how a popular commercial foaming agent quickly loses its structure when exposed to CO2. Observe the water accumulating at the bottom of the cylinder on the right as the foam degrades. The C-Quester™  foam remains stable during the 30-minute time lapse.
